The Out and Out Blues Band—also known as The Out & Outs—lives up to its promise. They explore classic blues from Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson to BB King, Bobby Bland, Taj Mahal and Rory Gallagher. They also break new ground with their own contemporary blues originals.

Skilled, Seasoned Line-Up

This powerhouse band combines Hammond organ with Leslie speaker, harmonica, guitar, bass and drums. Together they bring over 150 years of musical experience to the stage. Their leader, James Mackie, played keyboards with The Selecter and Madness in the 1980s. His rich background adds depth and flair to every performance.

  • James Mackie: Hammond organ, keys & tenor sax. He toured with Madness, even appearing on Saturday Night Live in New York

  • Ben Ruth: Harmonica & vocals. A Chicago resident who performed at the Chicago Blues Festival before returning to the UK

  • Niels Rasmussen: Guitar. Inspired by early ragtime and blues greats like Blind Blake and Rory Gallagher

  • Rob Livesey: Bass & vocals. Stage veteran, part of The Stumble, and supported legends such as Steve Cropper’s The Animals

  • James Barrott: Drummer. With a varied career, he’s played orchestral, jazz, funk and blues across the UK

Festival Spotlight: Colne, August 2025

Catch them live at the Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival in Colne. They perform on Saturday 23 August 2025 from 17:00 to 18:00 on the Exchange Project Stage. This festival celebrates its 34th year in 2025 and earned the title of UK Blues-Based Festival of the Year.
