Custom Barcode Artwork

Barcodes can be the ugliest part of product labelling. Custom barcode artwork transforms barcodes from being purely functional to integrating with your product design or even enhancing the design. If you have a good designer, they can modify the barcode for you – however, this is often expensive, and sometimes they alter the barcode so it won’t scan.*

For more information, see our page on custom barcodes.

We have dedicated designers that can provide customer barcode artwork for you. You need to purchase the barcode number first and then tell us about your company and products. Then our designers can create a design for you.

* Please keep in mind that any image impeding on the barcode itself may affect scannability of the barcode. Hence it is safest if doing this to build up and around the barcode and bear in mind the barcode dimensions.

There are three packages available, detailed below. Any extra design time is charged at a reasonable £25 per hour.

Ideas for Barcode Branding Artwork

Integrating Barcodes into Creative Design

  1. Incorporate Barcodes into Logos:
    • Integrate the barcode into your brand’s logo or mascot. This can make the barcode a unique part of the packaging, ensuring it stands out while maintaining brand identity.
  2. Thematic Barcode Designs:
    • Design the barcode to reflect the theme of the product. For instance, if the product is eco-friendly, the barcode could feature green elements or be shaped like a leaf or tree.
  3. Seasonal and Promotional Themes:
    • Adapt the barcode artwork for seasonal promotions. For example, during Christmas, the barcode could incorporate elements like snowflakes or Christmas trees. For Halloween, it might feature pumpkins or bats.

Enhancing Visual Appeal

  1. Barcode Shapes and Patterns:
    • Experiment with different shapes while maintaining the necessary contrast. Create barcodes that have wavy or zigzag patterns rather than traditional straight lines, as long as they remain scannable.
  2. Colorful Barcodes:
    • Use colors that align with your brand’s palette. Ensure the barcode maintains high contrast for readability, such as using dark bars on a light background.
  3. Background Integration:
    • Blend the barcode into the product’s artwork. For instance, if the packaging features a beach scene, the barcode could be designed to look like a beach umbrella or waves.

Functional and Aesthetic Enhancements

  1. Interactive Barcodes:
    • Combine barcodes with QR codes to provide additional information or interactive experiences. Customers could scan the barcode to access product details, promotions, or a brand’s story.
  2. Storytelling through Barcodes:
    • Use the space around the barcode to tell a story or provide a message. For instance, a chocolate brand could have a cocoa tree illustration growing out of the barcode, symbolizing its source.
  3. Transparency Effects:
    • Implement transparent elements within the barcode design, allowing parts of the product packaging to show through, creating a more integrated look.

Compliance and Functionality

  1. Maintaining Readability:
    • Always ensure that creative barcode designs remain functional. Test the barcodes with various scanners to verify they meet ISO standards and are easily scannable.
  2. Educating Consumers:
    • Use creative barcode designs to educate consumers about the product. For instance, a beverage company could design the barcode to look like a glass being filled, indicating freshness or quality.

Examples of Successful Barcode Branding

  • Absolut Vodka: Known for integrating creative barcode designs into their limited-edition bottles, making the barcode a part of the bottle’s aesthetic.
  • Coca-Cola: Uses unique barcode designs for special promotions, such as Christmas editions, where the barcode resembles a sleigh or Santa Claus.
  • Nestlé: Often incorporates thematic barcodes into their packaging for different seasons and special editions.

By creatively incorporating barcodes into the packaging design, brands can enhance their visual appeal and engage customers in new and innovative ways. This approach not only ensures functionality but also reinforces brand identity and storytelling.
