Understanding ISSN Barcodes: A Guide for UK Publishers
ISSN barcodes play a crucial role in the publishing industry by uniquely identifying serial publications such as magazines, journals, newspapers, and digital periodicals. For UK publishers, incorporating an ISSN barcode ensures that publications are easily tracked, distributed, and sold across retail and library systems globally.
An International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is an eight-digit code that distinguishes one serial from another. When integrated into a barcode, typically an EAN-13 format with a 977 prefix, the ISSN enables efficient scanning and cataloguing. Retailers and libraries rely on these barcodes to manage inventory, track sales, and maintain accurate records.
To obtain an ISSN, publishers should contact the British Library’s ISSN UK Centre. Once assigned, publishers must format the number correctly in the barcode. Including a price code and an issue number helps differentiate between editions, further streamlining distribution.

Using ISSN barcodes not only meets industry standards but also enhances a publication’s professional appearance and marketability. Distributors often require barcodes for shelf placement, and digital archives use them for indexing. ISSNs also help prevent confusion between similarly titled publications. In an increasingly digital and global publishing environment, ISSN barcodes simplify operations, boost visibility, and reinforce brand credibility.
By adopting ISSN barcodes, publishers assert control over their product identification, support efficient distribution, and improve accessibility for both retailers and readers.

An ISSN barcode is usually created from the 8-digit ISSN number often assigned to a magazine. They are 13-digit numbers created by adding 977 to the start of the ISSN number, deleting the last digit of the ISSN number (a calculated check digit), adding a nominal price code (usually 00) and then adding a calculated checksum – this makes a 13-digit barcode number
e.g. the ISSN number 1234-567a (where a is a checksum) becomes 977 1234567 00 x (where x is a calculated checksum).
